Sphaerophoria rueppellii

A rather distinct short-bodied Sphaerophoria due to the bulbous abdomen of the male (broadest at the tip), the oblique/curved bands and spots on the tergites, and the truncated nature of the yellow stripe on the shoulder which does not extend rearwards above the wingbases as in other Sphaerophoria species (except S. loewi). The male genitalia is also very distinct.

Sphaerophoria rueppellii favours open, sparsely-vegetated habitats where plants such as goosegrasses, oraches, knotweeds and mayweeds are plentiful. It can be abundant at saltmarsh edge (often straying onto sea-lavender flowers some way out) and the margins of tidal rivers, but also likes brownfield sites well inland. 

Flight period April to October.

The aphidophagous larvae have been found on goosefoots, brassicas and sow-thistles.

It is most frequent in the south, but scattered records exist as far north as Scotland.
