Anasimyia contracta

Description

Wing length 5 to 7.5 mm. This species has a slightly 'wasp waisted' abdomen. Segment T2 is narrower than it is long and it has greyish 'hockey stick' shaped markings.

Similar Species

A. transfuga has similar markings but with segment T2 parallel sided and wider then long.

Habitat

Usually seen on emergent vegetation at the margins of still water.

When to see it

April to September peaking in June and July.

Life History

Larvae have been found living between the leaf sheaths of rotting plants.

UK Status

Widely distributed but local in Britain.

VC55 Status

Thought to be infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
