Phtheochroa schreibersiana
This is quite a small moth with a wingspan of about 12 to 15 mm. It is well marked and quite distinctive, with dark brown or blackish markings on a deep straw coloured background.
Please provide a good, close-up image to the County Moth Recorder to verify.
It is thought to be associated with various trees including Elm, Bird Cherry and Poplar.
Flight period is May and June.
The larval food-plants are thought to include Elm, Bird Cherry and Poplar.
Formerly a scarce and local resident in the south, but there has been a resurgence in records suggestive of either adventive origin or recolonisation. There has been an increase in records since 2017.
Currently rare in Leicestershire and Rutland; the records from Sapcote and Thurlaston on 25th May 2026 were the first for our area.
