Camarotoscena speciosa
A gall-causing psyllid affecting Black Poplars and hybrids. The edges of the leaves thicken and roll upwards, and often turn reddish or pale green. Inside the leaf rolls are many waxy psyllid nymphs. The adult insects are very small - c.2mm - and are brownish or yellowish in colour, with yellow legs and mottled brown wings. It hibernates in conifers.
The aphid Thecabius affinis also causes leaf rolls on poplars
When recording a gall, the psyllid nymphs and/or adults inside the leaf roll must be photographed, and the host tree species must be identified. Ouside the gall, the adult insects should be keyed out or examined by an expert before submission to NatureSpot.
