The NatureSpot Photo of the Month for September is this image of Phragmidium bulbosum teliospores, taken by NatureSpot contributor Sue. More...
It will not have escaped your attention that fungi season has begun. But fungi come in all sizes, from big red and white spotty ones to microscopic fungi that need a lot of detective work to identify with certainty. Phragmidium bulbosum is a gall-causing rust fungus that affects the leaves of various Rubus species (Blackberry, etc). As with so many species of fungi (large and small), definitive identification requires examining the spores using a microscope. We welcome all your fungi records, but let us salute those who go above and beyond, toiling away at the microscope to identify the difficult ones. (Although to be honest, revealing the microscopic world is huge fun!)
