Waxwing

The NatureSpot Photo of the Month for December is this image of a Waxwing, taken by NatureSpot contributor Chris Hubbard. Read more...

The spectacular Waxwing, Bombycilla garrulus, is an occasional winter visitor to Leicestershire and Rutland.  We haven't had many for the last couple of years but December 2023 brought what is called a 'Waxwing winter', when these spectacular birds turn up in flocks. They come from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Russia to feast on berries, competing with 'winter thrushes' (Fieldfares and Redwings), and moving on when stocks are exhausted. We are very grateful to Chris Hubbard for his superb photo of this occasional but very welcome visitor which has helped to brighten up a rather dull December.
