Although it looks like we will be locked down a while longer, you've probably got some Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) in your neighbourhood (you can check the map here). The next couple of months are the time to check it for the Butterbur Hoverfly (Neoascia obliqua).
This small insect is quite distinctive and if present should be easy to spot on Butterbur. It can be distinguished from similar members of this family by the oblique markings resembling an inverted V on the abdomen segment 2. Please check your local Butterbur plants and send us your photos of this scarce insect.
