Getting There

The verge is located on Main Street, to the south of the village of Bisbrooke, which is by the A47.

From Bisbrooke village, take Main Street heading south and continue over Seaton Road. The verge is on the left side.

It may be possible to park on the verge on Main Street, but please be mindful of traffic. Alternatively, some roadside parking is available in the village.

Description

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2005, the verge has a length of 222 metres (2.5 metres wide), and the main habitat is mesotrophic grassland. There is a shallow ditch present and an adjacent hedgerow. The area is mostly dominated by coarse grasses and herbs, and is usually cut in April. In 2009, the general condition was judged to be poor/declining, with fewer indicator species than the original assessment.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Agrimony, Cowslip, Black Knapweed, Blackthorn, Reflexed Saltmarsh-Grass, Meadow Buttercup, Creeping Buttercup, Hedge Woundwort, Black Bryony, Lesser Trefoil, Red Clover, White Clover, Yellow Oat-grass, Common Nettle, Germander Speedwell, and Common Vetch with some patches of Cow Parsley and Hogweed.
