Ransom Field, Braunstone Town
Selected Wild Place / Other Wild Places / Public Rights of Way / VC55 boundary
Site species count:
This is a large field owned by Jelsons Ltd but they were not allowed to develop it despite showing it as a new housing site in the late 1950’s early 60’s. The name is derived from the locals belief in the 1970’s that any purchaser, i.e. the Local Authority, would have to pay as if the land had had houses built on it!
The field has had no agricultural intervention since before 1954. The area has been left to nature with only two small footpaths crossing over it. One of the boundary’s to the field is the original Parish boundary consisting of a mature hedge and ditch. Changes in the direction have been marked by mature oak trees, one of which has suffered several lightening strikes and is now a tall stump!
