Getting There

Whitwell is located on the north edge of Rutand Water, and the A606 passes through the centre of the village. The A606 can be accessed via the A6003 to the west, and the A1 to the east.

Description

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2004, Whitwell verge lies to the east of Whitwell village and is 230 metres in length, on only the north side of Whitwell Road (A606). The main habitat is mesotrophic grassland.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Agrimony, Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Field Scabious, Meadow Vetchling, Autumn Hawkbit, Rest-harrow, Burnet Saxifrage, Meadow Buttercup, Bulbous Buttercup, Meadow Cranesbill, and Yellow Toadflax.
