Getting There

Hooby Lane connects the A1 to Cottesmore Airfield. From the A1, turn westwards onto Hooby Lane at the roundabout, then take the left fork to remain on this road. The verge begins approximately half-way to the airfield.

Some parking may be possible by the verge, particularly by the airfield, but please be mindful of traffic and private land.

There is no bus service to this area.

Description

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2005, the Hooby Lane Stretton verge is 230 metres in length, and up to 2.5 metres wide between the tarmac and an unkempt hedge, on the northern side of the road only. The main habitat is mesotrophic grassland, and is reported to be dominated by tall grasses but in reasonable condition.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Common Knapweed, Field Scabious, Meadow Vetchling, Common Bird's-foot-trefoil, Common Restharrow, Meadow Buttercup, Bulbous Buttercup, Yellow-rattle, Red Clover, Greater Knapweed, and Salad Burnet.
