Foxton North Lane verges
Selected Wild Place / Other Wild Places / Public Rights of Way / VC55 boundary
North Lane lies to the west of the village, bordering mainly farmland. It loops around the edge of the village, connecting to Main Street at both ends.
Road verge
Site species count:
North Lane is a quiet back-road with lovely wild verges on both sides. A brook runs along part of its length and other parts are backed by hedges. There are two stretches that are including in the project: a longer section on the west side and a shorter section beyond on the east.
The verges are being managed to improve biodiversity as part of the County Council/Parish Council Verges Biodiversity Project. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that by managing the verge as a wildflower meadow it can support a much greater variety of wildlife species.
The verge has been surveyed by NatureSpot but different species come and go throughout the year we will get a much better understanding of the nature value of this site if local residents can add records of what they have seen. Please take a photo if possible and include it with your record, using NatureSpot's Submit Records form. Your record and any photos will then appear on this page!
No mowing takes place between April and August to allow the grasses and wildflowers to grow and bloom, providing food and cover to a wide variety of insects and other creatures.
In 2024, the NatureSpot survey revealed 48 plant species along the verge, 11 of which were in the hedges.
A list of all the species found at the site, together with any images taken, appears below.
Note: the verge boundaries shown on the map are indicative, please refer to the signed/staked areas area on the ground for the exact location.
Parts of these verges have an excellent plant diversity including some notable grass species (Meadow Barley and Crested Dog's-tail) which are indicative of long-establish unimproved grassland. The adjacent brook adds further interest, supporting Banded Demoiselle damselflies.
The records and images below may include those from adjacent sites if the grid reference submitted with these records overlaps the boundary of this Wild Place.
The latest images and records displayed below include those awaiting verification checks so we cannot guarantee that every identification is correct. Once accepted, the record displays a green tick.
