Description

The BumbleBee Acre was devised as a biodiversity enhancement project for Leicester City Council using funds granted by Sustrans after improvements to the Great Central Way section of Sustrans' National Route No6. The idea developed several years ago after reading Dave Goulson’s book (Dave set up the Bumblebee Conservation Trust) A Sting in the Tale. Ditches and bunds have been created and the topsoil stripped (to be planted with native hedge species) to help provide habitat for small mammals, which in turn provide overwintering accommodation for queen bees and nesting opportunities. This project aims to provide nectar and pollen, critical for healthy bumblebees, over their fully active periods from February to November.
