Hathern Shepshed Rd verge
Selected Wild Place / Other Wild Places / Public Rights of Way / VC55 boundary
The verge is adjacent to the allotments at the south-eastern end of the village on Shepshed Road.
Road verge
Site species count:
The verge lies at the south-western end of the village on Shepshed Road just outside the allotments. It is approximately 3 meters wide and is bisected in the middle by the allotment entrance. A tarmac footpath borders the inside boundary with a further narrow section of grassland leading to a mature hedge.
The verge is being managed to improve biodiversity as part of the County Council/Parish Council Verges Biodiversity Project. The aim is to manage the verge as a wildflower meadow so it can support a much greater variety of wildlife species.
The verge has been surveyed by NatureSpot but different species come and go throughout the year we will get a much better understanding of the nature value of this site if local residents can add records of what they have seen. Please take a photo if possible and include it with your record, using NatureSpot's Submit Records form. Your record and any photos will then appear on this page!
No mowing should take place between April and August to allow the grasses and wildflowers to grow and bloom, providing food and cover to a wide variety of insects and other creatures. The meadow grassland that grows will then be cut in September.
In 2024, the NatureSpot survey revealed 48 plant species along the verge.
A list of all the species found at the site, together with any images taken, appears below.
Note: the verge boundaries shown on the map are indicative, please refer to the signed/staked areas area on the ground for the exact location.
A number of interesting wildflowers and grasses were found growing in the verge, including Oxeye Daisy, Black Knapweed and Crested Dogstail.
The records and images below may include those from adjacent sites if the grid reference submitted with these records overlaps the boundary of this Wild Place.
