Getting There

The site is located 1-2 miles from the A1  and is easily accessed. From the A1, exit to the west, and turn onto Hooby Lane at the roundabout. Take the lefthand fork to stay on Hooby Lane, which becomes Thistleton Lane after the sharp bend in the road by the airfield.

Parking by the verge may be possible, particularly by the airfield, but please be mindful of traffic and private land. Alternatively, some roadside parking is available in Greetham village, which is a 10-15 minute walk away from the start of the verge.

Description

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2003, Greetham verge is located on Thistleton Lane, leading up to Cottesmore Airfield. The site is approximately 1300 metres long, and included the verges on both sides of the road. The main habitats are mesotrophic grassland, calcareous grassland, and mixed grassland.

Wildlife Highlights

Recorded species include: Agrimony, Common Bird’s-foot Trefoil, Black Knapweed, Common Restharrow, Cowslip, Field Scabious, Lady’s Bedstraw, Meadow Buttercup, Meadow Vetchling, Ox-eye Daisy, Red Clover, Yellow Rattle, Greater Knapweed, Hoary Plantain, Kidney Vetch, Knapweed Broomrape, and Salad Burnet.
