Great Casterton Grassland Roadside Verge
Selected Wild Place / Other Wild Places / Public Rights of Way / VC55 boundary
The site is located next to the A1 southbound sliproad into Great Casterton. The Old Great North Road also runs past the southern edge of the verge.
It may be possible to park near the bottom of the verge, but please be mindful of traffic and private land. Alternatively, roadside parking is available in Great Casterton, which is a short walk away.

Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2006, the verge is a steep bank between the hedge at the top and the A1 sliproad into Great Casterton. The main habitat of the 0.3 hectare site is calcareous grassland. In 2009, the condition was assessed as good but declining.
Recorded species include: Agrimony, Greater Knapweed, Purging Flax, Marjoram, Small Scabious, Blue Fleabane, Ploughman's-spikenard, Field Scabious, Bee Orchid, and Knapweed Broomrape.
In addition, Grey Sedge and Narrow-leaved Meadow Grass (both in the L&R Rare Plant Register 2007) have been recorded at the site.
